School & Youth Activities
The RCA Underground
Friday Nights, October 2016 – June 2017
Fall is here and we are busy planning another great year with the Rowayton Youth Underground for the 2016-2017 school year. The Rowayton Youth Underground is an RCA-sponsored program held in the lower level of the Rowayton Community Center. It provides a safe and supervised venue where our middle-school kids (6th & 7th graders) can socialize with friends one Friday night a month, with adult chaperones. There is ping-pong, air hockey, bumper pool and foosball tables as well as pop-a-shot basketball and other games. Weather permitting, there are also outdoor activities such as basketball, paddle tennis and touch football. Sixth and seventh graders meet on one Friday night per month (different Friday nights) from 6:30-8:30pm. A one-time registration fee of $125 for the year (October-June) pays for staff, special events and pizza and snacks. The few local “field trips” off site (ie: My three Sons, Skyzone) are always a highlight as well as the year-end Bayley Beach picnic in June.

Community Cooperative Nursery School

Tuesday, January 10th, 7:00-9:00pm
Make plans to join us for an Open House at CCNS on either Saturday, November 5th or Tuesday, January 12th at 4 Trolley Place, Rowayton. Explore first-hand what makes our school’s morning-only drop-off programs for children ages 2, 3, and 4 so special. Founded in 1953, CCNS proudly remains one of the few cooperative preschools licensed by the State of Connecticut. As a cooperative program, parents gain the opportunity to actively participate in their children’s learning at a dynamic time in their lives. Learning through play is at the heart of the CCNS experience. The school offers an emergent-based curriculum that builds upon children’s natural curiously and interests while delivering important development objectives to prepare them for elementary school and beyond. CCNS uses a project approach to deeply engage children and build motivation for continued questioning and a life-long love of learning and exploration.
Please visit ccnsct.org to learn more about the school. To RSVP for one of the Open Houses, set up a tour or speak to our director, please call us at 203.866.2184 or email us.

The Walkathon is back! Get ready for more fun as we start the 5th Annual Rowayton School Walkathon. Last year’s walkathon was another incredible success – we raised more than $32,000 with over 90% of the students bringing in pledges! The funds were used to create the first elementary STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) lab in the school district, purchase a mobile science cart and purchase new equipment for our brand new gym! Every student in every grade now has access to an amazing science and engineering lab, and an enhanced experience during gym class with our new variable height basketball hoops, climbing ropes, cargo net and monkey bars – a direct impact on every students’ education!
Fundraising efforts will begin on Monday, September 12th. Prizes and fun for all that participate! We hope to raise at least $28,000 to fund all school enrichment programs, our new Kindergarten – 2nd grade technology program and for making improvements to our lunch room. The 2016 Walkathon will take place on Friday, October 14 (rain date of Monday, October 17) at 2pm on the School Field. All family and friends are welcome to come cheer the students on as they walk one mile around the school field.
As summer swirls into fall, join us at The Rowayton Parents Exchange, an association of parents with new babies and young children. Each month, the RPE hosts events that appeal to moms, dads, children and couples. Members enjoy activities such as picnics and playtime at Bayley Beach, fun at Tumble Jungle, arts and crafts, painting at Green Moon, learning about animals at the Darien Nature Center, planting their first garden at The Potting Shed, Movie “nights”, Pop-Up Events and much more! For the parents we host monthly Mom Nights Out, cocktail parties, family BBQs, and themed parties. Enjoy a chance to build and further friendships with a community of parents in Rowayton and the surrounding areas while your kids do the same. Norwalk Mentor Program
One hour a week can change lives forever Volunteer just one hour a week to make a huge difference in a young person’s life! The Norwalk Mentor Program is looking for caring individuals who can spare just one hour a week to be a “mentor.”
Following a brief training, you will be matched with a student in one of the Norwalk Public Schools. You choose the school and the grade. You then meet with your “mentee” at school once a week for an hour – talking, playing games, reading or enjoying other activities. You can be that student’s friend, confidant, role model and advocate. As a mentor you will feel rewarded just seeing the difference you make as the young person you mentor matures and grows to reach his or her full potential.
To learn more about becoming involved with the Norwalk Mentor Program (a program of the Human Services Council), please email Nancy Pratt or call 203-849-1111 x3042.
