Letter from the RCA President

March 2017

Andyheadshotnew72

Andy Meyerson,
RCA President

It’s always a joy when spring returns to Rowayton. The temperature rises and the days are a little longer. The grass turns green and the trees start to bloom. Neighbors emerge from their homes and their kids begin to play outdoors once again. Our beautiful seaside town comes to life after a long, winter’s sleep.

Likewise, the Rowayton Civic Association speeds up when the winter starts to fade. While our winters are busy, spring is when we move into high gear. We look over the activities from the prior year and then determine what enhancements are needed. We meet, we plan, and then once spring hits, the RCA is up and running. Our mission is to enrich the lives of residents through providing programs and events and by supporting community initiatives. And that is the filter we use for everything we do.

The 2017 calendar of events is already shaping up very nicely. Annual favorites such as the Comedy Festival, the Summer Music, The River Ramble and Oktoberfest will return and the Summer Movie Festival will be back for its second year. We’re adding a Labor Day Volleyball tournament and we are resurrecting the Holiday Eggnog contest that was sorely missed last year. And our very popular Rowayton House Tour returns this fall. Look for details for all events inside of this issue and on our website.

In 2016, the RCA granted more than $40,000 to local organizations; Rowayton Elementary, Roton Middle School and Brien McMahon High School, the Rowayton Library, Rowayton Little League, The Rowayton Fire Department and Hands for Life for six AEDs which are now located throughout Rowayton. Also in 2016 we again offered a gift to the Norwalk Mentor Program. These grants and gifts were all made possible by all who donated to our Annual Appeal or came to one of our big fundraisers.

At our annual meeting this past February, the Board said farewell to six members whose terms have come to an end. These five members represented 25+ years of community service with the RCA:

  • Kurt Anderson – chaired Fun Run and Swim Races
  • Jeff Buda – Vice President, co-chaired Summer Music Festival
  • Nora King – Secretary and chaired Santa Run
  • Frani Taylor – co-chaired River Ramble
  • Rich Van Steen – co-chaired Oktoberfest and Light Up Rowayton
  • Sam Woodruff – co-chaired Fireworks

We thank them all for years of volunteering.

This year will be my seventh year on the RCA Board. I volunteer because I love this town. Each I year I work side by side with an amazing group of people. They represent various age groups, some are men and some are women, some brand new to town and some are longtime residents. The common denominator is they also love this town and they take pride in volunteering to organize programs that bring so much pleasure to the community. We look forward to another tremendous year.

Andy Meyerson
RCA Board President
